OBJECTIVE(S) The oral streptococci especially mutans Streptococci are related with the development of caries in humans. However, they are commonly distributed not only in populations with moderate or high caries incidence but also in populations having no or low caries experience. So, in this study, the differences between protein profiles of Streptococcus mutans from different sources were com...
full textTyping of Streptococcus mutans strains isolated from caries free and susceptible subjects by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis
This study was evaluated the clonal diversity of Streptococcus mutans in caries-free and caries-active subjects using MLEE. Strains from caries-free subjects were grouped in a single taxon. Unrooted dendrogram showed that different strains clustered in four different clades, also showed that more than one clonal type can be found in a same individual.

The adhesion of pathogenic bacteria to the host surface is an essential step in the development of numerous infections, including dental caries. Attachment of Streptococcus mutans, the main etiological agent of human dental caries, to the tooth surface may be mediated by glucan synthesized by glucosyltransferase (GTF) and by cell surface proteins, such as P1, which bind to salivary receptors. F...
full textStudies on strains of Streptococcus mutans isolated from caries-active and caries-free individuals in Iceland
BACKGROUND Dental caries has been strongly associated with mutans streptococci, particularly Streptococcus mutans and S. sobrinus. Many studies have linked these organisms to the carious process and counts of mutans streptococci have been used to monitor caries risk. The high levels of caries generally found in Iceland have enabled several studies to be performed on the variation within strains...
full textProduction of glucosyltransferase B and glucans by Streptococcus mutans strains isolated from caries-free individuals.
UNLABELLED Glucosyltransferase B is an enzyme produced by Streptococcus mutans, which catalyzes synthesis from sucrose of insoluble glucans that provide support to the biofilm. It is one of the main virulence factors in the generation of dental caries. However, its role is unclear in caries-free individuals who carry the bacteria. The aim of this study was to determine the production of glucosy...
